Monday’s don’t even exist on a place this beautiful.

This is not Björk’s island. Everyone has to stop saying this is her island.

On “Bjork’s Island” she resides under the midnight sun, fed lichen and dew from bellflowers by her animal friends. Sleeping on a bead of moss, otherworldly melodies come to her from the cacophony of sea birds and waves lapping at the steep cliffs.

But yeah, actually this is Elliðaey in Vestmannaeyjar and this is a hunting lodge for the locals on nearby island to catch puffins.

This is the island, also called Elliðaey, she was offered but declined.

She announces her plan for a quarter of student loans to be converted to grants for those that complete their studies on time. At the end one of the graduated declares simply “Foucault”. After a moment of pensive silence the others, one after another, nod knowingly and respond also with just: “Foucault”.

Starting to wonder if this exchange program hasn’t just been a waste of money. Going to classes where I can’t communicate with people is reminding me of how much I used to dread parties and balls during the first half of my teens. Going out of ones comfort zone is necessary to learn a new language but connecting to people is what redeems social situations for me.

Not to mention that my habit of procrastination isn’t getting better, it’s getting worse. Before I started working on this thesis I usually managed to rouse myself from apathy just in time to finish everything in the nick of time but now passed deadlined have become the norm. The failure to turn in a thesis has pretty much inured me to failing courses, something that would have been unthinkable for me five years ago.

Honestly I think I’ll have to take a break from school. Hopefully I can finish the thesis and find a job for next year. I’m never going become an academic anyway and I think programs with a steadier work flow than the two classes a week of history would fit me better. I should also save my student loans for something more practical. I don’t regret taking history as a subject but I do regret having spent more than two years doing nothing and I’d go so far as to say it’s affecting my mental health.
