1930s imagining of 1980s New York in the sci-fi musical Just Imagine (1930, dir. David Butler) (via)

Designed by art director Stephen Goosson, the city set was an elaborate miniature model that covered a ground area of 75 x 225 feet and whose tallest tower measured 40 feet.

Just Imagine’s New York was primarily inspired by architect Harvey Corbett’s prediction that 1970’s New York would resemble a “very modernized Venice” and by the futuristic urban designs presented in Hugh Ferriss’s 1929 book, The Metropolis of Tomorrow.

Ferriss’s drawings of the ”business center of the future” (pictures #3-5) provided the most direct inspiration for Goosson’s sets. Broad superhighways establish a geometric ground plan that extends upward through overlapping levels of bridges, streets, and terraced walkways. The grid of streets and bridges is pierced by huge freestanding skyscrapers surrounded by lower setback buildings, a design Ferriss created as an analogy to the natural world of “towering mountain peaks… surrounded by foothills”

The opening scenes of the (otherwise mediocre) film, which feature this cityscape, can be seen here

More on the building of the Just Imagine set. Collection of Hugh Ferriss’s futuristic city sketches here.

How wonderful when a conversation you’re having about interesting things segues into zombie romance and mashups and then inevitable touches on bestiality and the participants snigger and exclaim “furries” with knowing smiles.

Comics booth

Today and tomorrow I’m doing some extra work at the central library introducing kids in 9th grade to various genres of books. First the kids listen to some stuff about the library and a comedian or a mini-celebrity then they are free to roam. I man one of several booths with stuff we though might interest the teenagers. Mine is on comics but the others are on speculative fiction, love stories, thrillers, biographies and chick-lit.

I wasn’t really involved in the planning so when I came to work I was presented with preselected comics that had been laid out and added a few I thought were interesting myself. I’m nowhere near an expert on all genres of comics so felt a bit out of depth, especially since the speculative fiction booth was overseen by people from the local gaming store that probably has the biggest experts in that field. Luckily they and others from the central library helped me out a bit.

Manga seems to be the most popular among that cohort, unfortunately since I can count the titles I’ve read on one hand. I actually got some suggestion on what to read myself. At least I knew enough about most of the other titles to tell the kids about them. There weren’t that many that approached the booths, perhaps our presence was a bit intimidating, and the SF booth was by far the most popular. I only really chatted with a few boys and one girl but I managed to interest them in the Dungeon series by Trondheim and the Werewolves of Montpelier by Jason, my picks for the table.

Tomorrow there will be two more groups and I’m going to do some research to better prepare myself. Standing alone and trying to connect with a bunch of teenagers isn’t exactly deep within my comfort zone but the experience was nevertheless fun and it’s always fun to meet new people that share your interests.
